HSA enriches the lives of young people and their families in Harlem and the Greater New York City area by providing, unrivaled on-site arts instruction, vital outreach partnerships with New York City schools; presenting quality community performances and programs attracting diverse audiences to our dynamic cultural arts facility, and providing essential workspace for aspiring artists. Through these activities, HSA connects students to the rich cultural traditions, diversity, and talent of Harlem.

Who are not only professionally trained but are actively performing their art nationally and internationally.

  • Mecca Alim is a Bronx based traditional and digital visual artist. She has shown her works in the Greenpoint Gallery (Brooklyn), the Mooney Center Gallery (New Rochelle), The Holy Apostles Gallery (Chelsea Manhattan), The El Taller Latino Americano (Spanish Harlem), the Focal Point Gallery (Bronx), and more.

    Professional Experience includes: Alvin Ailey Jazz Instructor, Principal dancer for Beyonce, featured in two music videos (Get me Bodied, Green Light),Principal dancer for Black Girls Rock with Jennifer Hudson two years in a row

    Professional Experience includes: Choreographer for the FIDHJI Festival in France. Trained with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Horton, Dunham, Graham, Jazz, Ballet and West African. Jazz Teacher at Summer Dance Workshop, Confédération Nationale de la Danse in Martinique
  • Careitha Davis
    Careitha Davis is born and raised in Brooklyn, NY with roots in Trinidad and Tobago. Her dance training credentials includes Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn, Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, Pittsburg Youth Ballet and SUNY Purchase.

Professional Experience includes: Mentored students of varied ages at Americorp: Children’s Aid Society. Freelance Private Piano Instructor in Parkchester, NY. NYC Summer Youth Employment Program Counselor at Co­op City Beacon Summer Camp

    Professional Experience includes: Retired music teacher from Laguardia High School of the Performing Arts, Has appeared at Chocolate, Billie’s Black, Minton’s, Paris Blues, The Lenox Lounge, Smoke, Small’s, Copeland’s, La Cave, Honeysuckle and the Village Gate. Performed at Lincoln Center with the Jazz Orchestra in the world Premier of Aby 200

    Nsangou – Hip Hop Theater and Theater Arts
    B.F.A. in acting from Howard University. Co-Founder of the Continuum Project, Inc. Professional Experience includes:A member of UNIVERSES, he performed in productions of Ameriville and was a contributor for Party People. Playwright who has written Re:Definition and received a fellowship from the New Black Fest to write Search For The Crystal Stairs. Directed original work entitled I.D at Penn State University.
  • Renee is a musician, composer, and orchestrator from Singapore. In New York City, she’s an accompanist for the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company where she plays for Ballet Masters Keith Saunders, Kellye Saunders, Resident Choreographer Robert Garland and various guest artistes like Elena Kunikova, Sasha Radetsky, Debra Winget, Debra Austin, Charla Genn. This year, she has also travelled on tour with the company to Washington DC in 2017 and performed with New York Theatre Ballet at the City Center in the recent APAP 2017.

    Amanda Pope – Hip-Hop, Urban Street Jazz, Performance Choreography, and Competitive Dance
    Founder and artistic director of Amanda Pope Dance Company and award winning dance team Chimera Concept. Professional Experience includes: Recognized as one of the top fifty teachers in New York City receiving the NYC Big Apple Teacher Excellence Award, awarded by former mayor Mike Bloomberg. Featured in Dance Teacher Magazine. Professional dancer with hip hop artists Lil Kim, Ne-Yo, Lady Sovereign, and Bellan Contemporary Dance Theater.
  • Leyland Simmons Resident choreographer
    Leyland Simmons is a Graduate of the Professional Performing Arts High School in New York City and a former member of Ailey 2 and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Mr. Simmons has also performed with the New York City Ballet, Peridance Ensemble, Forces of Nature Dance Company, Nathan Trice’s/Rituals, George Faison and Ballet X. Leyland has also performed at Jacob’s Pillow, the Cincinnati, Moscow and Miami International Ballet Festivals.

    Graduate of St. John’s University and NYU. Currently featured in Rush Galleries exhibition Power Protest and Resistance. Professional Experience includes: Co Founder of the MV Fit Life Health Company. Instructor at the 4 hour Empowerment Summit and Vendor Show at St. Peter’s University. Columbia University School of the Arts ensemble performer on. From Ashes to Angel’s Dust: A Journey Through Womanhood at The Miller Theater.
