Teacher: Annette Rusin
Students create finished pieces in a variety of two-dimensional art forms such as painting, drawing, collage, and monoprint. Students learn the vocabulary relating to visual art concepts, materials, and the elements & principles of two-dimensional design (color, simple and complex shapes, texture, pattern, contrast, emphasis etc.) An introduction to basic color theory and class exercises focusing on the use of color are taught. Each week students are given a wide range of visual references – historical to contemporary artists that exemplify the concepts being covered. I have presented artists such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Frida Khalo, James Castle, Betye Saar, Alteronce Gumby, and Faith Ringold . We look at various approaches to making art such as abstraction, working from memory, storytelling and realistic approaches tied to direct observation.
