“We have made them believe that everything beautiful is outside the Harlem community. I want them to make beauty in this community.”
— Dorothy Maynor, HSA Founder (1910–1996)
When Dorothy Maynor opened the doors of Harlem School of the Arts in 1964, she envisioned a place where every child in Harlem, regardless of their family’s means, could discover the transformative power of the arts. More than sixty years later, that vision only survives because people like you choose to sustain it.
Tuition has never covered the true cost of an HSA education, and it never will. Scholarships, financial aid, and free community programming exist because donors show up for our students year after year. Every gift keeps our doors open to the young artists who need us most.

What is a Donor-Advised Fund?
A Donor-Advised Fund is a charitable giving program that lets you make tax-efficient donations with the flexibility to support the causes you care about. DAFs are managed by a sponsoring organization — Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, DAFgiving360, and many others.
Grants recommended to HSA can be designated in two ways:
EIN: 13-2552500 · 501(c)(3) Fully Tax-Exempt

Double Your Impact for Free
Many employers match charitable contributions made by their employees. Search for your employer to find out if your company offers a matching gift or volunteer grant program. A match could double or even triple your gift to Harlem School of the Arts at no extra cost to you.

Herb Alpert, a legendary jazz musician, picked up a trumpet in his elementary school music class, and he never looked back—music became his life. Alpert has since dedicated his life to the art. Through the Herb Alpert Foundation, Alpert and his family have become forerunners in arts education philanthropy. Since 2010, the Alpert Foundation has played a crucial role in supporting the Harlem School of the Arts (HSA), particularly during a time when the school faced the threat of permanent closure. The continued support from Mr. Alpert, his family, and their foundation has been vital to HSA’s mission of offering world-class arts education to young people with immense potential. Their contributions ensure the nurturing of the next generation of artists.
