We’re thrilled to share that we’re looking for a dynamic director of music!  Here’s an overview of the position:

Overview:

The Director of the Music Department is responsible for developing, managing, and evaluating all music curriculum instruction, music educational programs, and music performances within Harlem School of the Arts, and in external community settings. Additionally, the Director of Music serves in a leadership role in partnership with senior management to develop programs and partnerships that support and enhance HSA’s community outreach and visibility. The Director of Music focuses on recruiting students with potential, desire and talent to train at the highest levels in the music disciplines. This position is a full-time salaried position with a reporting responsibility to the Senior Director of Education.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Curriculum Development:

Develop and oversee a comprehensive music curriculum that aligns with the institution’s educational goals and standards. Manage and oversee the music department’s private lessons and group class curriculum. Lead a development strategy for building a new string orchestra program.

Recruitment:

Lead a strong recruitment strategy to meet enrollment goals for general group classes and private lessons. Attract students that have a strong commitment to musical instruction and growth. Uphold HSA’s standard of musical excellence for enrollment in jazz band, string orchestra, and/or the Prep Scholarship program.

Collaboration:

Collaborate with other faculty members and departments to integrate the music department into interdisciplinary projects and events, fostering a cross-disciplinary approach to learning. Work closely with the Development department to ensure a clear understanding and implementation of programming that meets grant fulfillment requirements.

Performance Opportunities:

Coordinate all Music Department recitals/performances/concerts. Organize and oversee regular performances, recitals, concerts, and other musical events, both within the institution and in the broader community. Set high standards for musical excellence and performance quality, challenging students to reach their full potential and exceed expectations in every musical endeavor.

Professional Development:

Stay abreast of current trends and best practices in music education, participate in professional development opportunities, and continually seek to enhance teaching methodologies.

Administrative Duties:

Manage administrative tasks related to the music program, including regular staff meetings, payroll approval, budget management, scheduling, equipment maintenance, and communication with teaching artists, students and families.

Benchmarks, Goals, and Quantitative Measurement:

Establish clear benchmarks and goals for the music program, including student achievement, ensemble performance quality, and program growth. Develop quantitative metrics to measure progress towards these goals, such as student performance evaluations, audition outcomes, and participation rates in music events and competitions. Generate comprehensive reports detailing the progress, achievements, and challenges of the music program. Collaborate closely with the Senior Director of Education to align programmatic goals with the institution’s overarching educational objectives and refine strategies for continuous improvement.

Cultural Focus:

Foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, and camaraderie within the music program, cultivating a sense of belonging and support among students, faculty, and staff. Prioritize building strong relationships based on trust, empathy, and collaboration, creating a musical community that feels like a second family to all members. Organize regular social events, gatherings, and team-building activities to strengthen bonds and promote a sense of unity among students and faculty.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A master’s degree or higher in music education, music performance, or a related field preferred.

• Extensive experience as a music educator, preferably in a school setting.
• Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to effectively manage a diverse range of responsibilities.
• Excellent administrative skills.
• Superb communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, faculty, parents, and community members.
• Dedication to ongoing professional growth and development, with a passion for staying current with advancements in music education.
• Demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate students, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.
• A strong commitment to the institution’s mission and values, with a passion for fostering artistic excellence.
• Experience working with technology and digital tools for music education and performance is desirable.

Schedule:

*The schedule for this position is Tuesday through Saturday On-site.

Location:

Harlem School of the Arts is located at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue in Harlem. It is easily accessible via the A, C, B, and D subway trains.
