We’re Hiring: Picturebooks Teaching Artist
Harlem School of the Arts seeks an experienced children’s book Illustrator and Teaching Artist to teach a beginners course on picturebook creation to young elementary school students.

Job Summary:
The Picturebooks Teaching Artist should have a track record of excellence and a demonstrated depth of knowledge in their professional work, as well as demonstrated teaching experience in school or community organization settings. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with elementary school students, be equipped with excellent classroom management skills, have formal experience in visual arts education, and be eager to cultivate relationships within a diverse, multicultural community. A strong understanding of art learning standards and experience adapting curriculum for younger age groups and learning environments is required. Experience in public school classrooms is a strong plus. Class size can be as many as 15 students and will take place on Saturday mornings from 11:00am-12:30pm from September 24, 2026 through May 29, 2027. There will be an exhibition at the end of the program where students will have the opportunity for their work to be showcased for friends and family and broader community at large. This is a part-time, non-exempt position.

- Organized, reliable, well-prepared, and consistent
- Experienced in classroom management techniques
- Confident in busy, non-traditional classroom settings
- Collaborative and cooperative with an interest in interdisciplinary learning and shared goals
Qualifications:
- Professional experience and extensive training in children’s book illustration. Experience in digital production a plus
- 2+ years’ experience teaching students in a school or community setting, preferably elementary level.
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated experience delivering high quality instruction to children
- Experience creating developmentally appropriate sequential lesson plans
- Ability to assess progress and success of students and adapt as needed (in teaching style, materials, equipment, and sequencing)
Salary:
$65 per hour, part time, non-exempt and $25 per hour for lesson planning.
